mmm really like the Shropshire Lad. Second place is the heritage, but I def see what you mean about the start up and maintenance on that

I’m also looking at shrub roses. Maybe something in a pale yellow or warmer pink tone. There are some gorgeous possibilities, but the start up cost, the maintenance, and the mess are intimidating. i know you ruled it out but tea olive gets my vote hands down. that is my favorite smelling plant.
